Michael Steele's latest gaffe, in which he said in an appearance on Fox News that Republicans won't take back Congress in 2010, is such an embarrassment to GOP leaders that they've taken to begging his staff to keep him quiet. "You really just have to get him to stop. It's too much," a top congressional aide said in a call to Steele's staff, the Washington Post reports. According to the Post, the call turned nasty as one congressional staffer accused Steele of launching "a Republican apology tour at the exact wrong time" and another called Steele "unprepared and unknowledgeable" in his television appearances. Steele took the latest criticism over his comments particularly badly, telling ABC News Radio on Thursday that his detractors in the GOP should "shut up" and "get a life." Steele added: "I'm looking them in the eye and say, 'I've had enough of it. If you don't want me in the job, fire me. But until then, shut up. Get with the program or get out of the way.'"
