Site of convention lies in mandatory evacuation zone.

A hurricane in Florida in August? Republicans don’t have to be rocket scientists to make backup plans in case Tampa is hit with a hurricane during the convention—although no hurricane has hit Tampa since 1946. A violent storm once sent 15 feet of water over the land that is now the Tampa Bay Convention Center. And the site of this year’s convention is in a mandatory evacuation zone when storms reach 96mph, or category 2. The 2008 convention in Minnesota was affected by Hurricane Gustav making landfall 1,300 miles away.
