In order to avoid the death penalty, Melissa Huckaby pleaded guilty on Monday to the murder of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu and is expected to be sentenced to life in prison in early June. In response to concerns about her state of mind at the time of the plea, Huckaby said, “I am currently stable on medication.” The 29-year-old was arrested in April on suspicion of kidnapping, raping, and killing Cantu, whose family lived near Huckaby in the same California mobile home park.
