A data breach on an Italian security firm that specializes in surveillance technology exposed 400 gigbytes of alleged internal documents, source code, and email communications Sunday that appear to show that the company works with oppressive regimes. Hacking Team, which is known for providing surveillance tools to “law-enforcement agencies and intelligence communities,” has been listed by activist group Reporters Without Borders as a company on the Enemies of the Internet index. The company has claimed to only work with ethical governments, but the cache appeared to reveal customers including Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Bahrain. It was not immediately clear who hacked the company. Hackers also vandalized the firm’s Twitter account, changing the name to “Hacked Team” and publishing messages with alleged images of the exposed data.
