The Texas State Board of Education held a hearing Tuesday over concerns that a new textbook for Mexican-American studies is riddled with mistakes and racist comments. Dozens of protesters showed up at the hearing in Austin to demand the textbook not be distributed to schoolchildren. The book, Mexican American Heritage, published by Momentum Instruction, reportedly has 68 factual errors and contains statements such as, “drinking on the job could be a problem.” Another statement in the book reportedly says Chicanos “opposed Western civilization and wanted to destroy this society.” Ruben Cortez Jr., a member of the board of education who opposed the book, said, “Imagine Donald Trump or David Duke writing a book about African-American studies, that’s what Cynthia Dunbar has done on Mexican-American studies.”
