Herman Cain’s new strategy for attracting black voters is apparently to insult them. The 2012 presidential hopeful told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday that African Americans don’t typically vote conservatively because they’ve been “brainwashed into not being open-minded.” Cain said he has received “vitriol” because he is “running for the Republican nomination as a conservative.” But this strategy may backfire: NPR blogger Frank James argues that “Cain makes it sound like African Americans are too weak-minded or stupid to recognize what’s in their own self interest…not the best way to win over voters.”
