Peter Workman, the independent book publisher who was known for bringing us unlikely hits like The Official Preppy Handbook and The Silver Palate Cookbook, died Sunday from cancer at his home in Manhattan at the age of 74. He founded Workman Publishing, and one of every three books he issued sold 100,000 copies or more, which is a remarkable record.
