Hoekstra Opponent Benefits From Offensive Ad

Raised more than $100,000 after it aired.

As we must occassionally be reminded, the presidential primary is not the only election currently under way in this country. During the Super Bowl, Michigan Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra aired a strikingly offensive ad featuring an Asian woman who thanks Hoekstra’s opponent Debbie Stabenow for her reckless spending, saying, “Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good.” But the ad has, predictably, backfired in Stabenow’s favor. The incumbent Democratic senator launched a money bomb just hours after Hoekstra’s ad aired and, one week later, raised $169,210—$25,000 more than the attack ad cost Hoekstra in the first place.
