Now’s the time to buy a house: U.S. home sales jumped 5.7 percent in September, according to new numbers from the Commerce Department, to an annually adjusted rate of 313,000 homes. That’s still less than half of the 700,000 homes economists say are needed for a healthy housing market. The slight increase likely came because desperate builders slashed prices.
