Could this really be the sound of compromise? The GOP’s House leadership urged Democrats Friday to accept a temporary budget extension that includes $4 billion in spending cuts and would prevent a government shutdown on March 4. It's a canny play by Republican Speaker John Boehner, whose party has said it will insist on $2 billion in additional cuts for every week that the process is delayed further. Democrats reportedly reacted favorably to the plan, meaning the threat of a shutdown has been staved off for at least two more weeks.
