She is someone I have known since she was young and who has now grown into a woman. I love seeing that and capturing people as they change. We feature up-and-coming actors in Verge, the digital magazine which I founded. It’s fun to watch people when they’re young and then to see their careers blossom.

What an amazing man. Who doesn't want to meet Michael Caine? He was in every movie when I was growing up. This is one of those pictures where his face is emerging out of shadow. I would love to hang out more and ask questions about his old movies.

I have known her since before she was famous, indeed [since] the year that she had lots of movies, including The Help, coming out but no-one knew who she was. So, she had time to prepare for what happened next, but she’s stayed very grounded and hasn’t changed that much. People like her are willing to express themselves emotionally in the photograph because they know me and we have such a history. For me, this photograph is a total representation of her and my relationship, rather than me getting her to do something specific.

I was really excited to shoot his portrait for the first time. He apparently didn’t like the moustache, which he had to grow for a movie. He’s a little more serious than you’d imagine, but really nice and personable. He’s one of the biggest stars in the world, but here I hope I captured him a little off-guard, but still approachable.

She’s cool, and she looks really cool in this picture. She is a great beauty, and even though people may assume that means she can be standoffish, she is not. As this picture shows, she’s down to play a bit. You can see she knows what she’s doing.

He’s totally goofball: super funny, then you see him in Breaking Bad. He’s got these two sides to him, and this shot perfectly represents both sides of him. One side of his face looks ironic, the other side serious. It gives you the whole essence of who this guy is.

He’s kind of a badass and one of the coolest dudes around. Like Daniel Radcliffe, he had loved some shots we did the previous year, so he was into playing and doing other things. I’m really into profile shots. There’s something to be said for looking directly into the lens, but there is also an amazing kind of quietness and really great emotional aspect of doing a profile like this, especially the way he is looking. You can feel the emotion in his face. It is not a static portrait.

She looks absolutely glamorous, and she shocks you—she has this beautiful, incredible air about her, and you might think she’s high-up and unattainable, but in person she’s so not like that.

This is one of my favorites. I met him years ago right when he started. I’m striving to get the depth right and also capture the subtle emotion. Something about this image sums up everything I strive for in a picture. I really think it’s the kind of image that could be iconic and last.

I’ve photographed her many times over the years. It’s interesting with people like her to see her evolve, to look at her and think this is not a little girl any more. This photograph doesn’t just show her beauty, but also that she is no longer the ‘quirky independent film girl.’

When I shot it, I thought, ‘This was an iconic picture, people will remember this picture.’ I couldn’t believe it when he passed away.
