With the world’s gaze on France and Germany, the United Kingdom is beginning to feel a bit left out. But Financial Times columnist Philip Stephens says British leaders have been the odd one out before, and believes some simple tactics could help David Cameron recover the country’s profile. “Don’t hector,” Stephens writes. Don’t “attach conditions to British acquiescence in treaty changes.” But more importantly, he should try to shake the impression that Britain views the euro zone with detached contempt. “Counter-intuitive as it may seem for the Tories, who have so long demonized Brussels, Britain’s best ally in all this is probably the European Commission.”
