HP to Keep Making PCs

Hewlett-Packard employees must be getting whiplash. Meg Whitman, the new chief executive, said Thursday the company will continue to make personal computers, reversing former CEO Leo Apotheker's plan to spin off the profitable division. Separating the division would have cost billions, Whitman says, and then the spun-off company would have ended up competing with its parent in servers and other markets. Whitman also said she might revisit tablets, another reversal after Apotheker suddenly canceled the TouchPad two months after its debut. “The market was created by Apple,” she said. “That doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a strong No. 2 player.”
