A massive demonstration took to the streets of London on Saturday, as 400,000 people came out to protest cuts to the public sector. Thousands of police were needed to maintain order, and Metropolitan police warned that “a small but significant minority” plan to hijack the march and stage violent attacks. Organizers say the march will be peaceful, with brass bands and Bollywood shows planned, but with so many separate marches feeding into the main one, and acts of civil disobedience planned like a sit-down in Trafalgar Square, police are nervous it could get out of hand. Teachers, council staff, nurses, students, and union members are marching, many brought in from outside London by the 800 buses and 10 trains arranged for the demonstration.
