Hurricane Danny Weakens to Category 2

DOWNGRADE

After reaching peak winds of 110 mph.

Hurricane Danny, the first Atlantic hurricane of the year, weakened to a Category 2 storm after reaching peak maximum sustained winds of 110 mph Friday night. The hurricane is expected to continue weakening as it moves west toward the Leeward Islands. “Vertical shear is expected to increase further during the next couple of days, which should allow drier air in the surrounding environment to penetrate into Danny’s circulation,” the National Hurricane Center said in its forecast.
