It’s no secret that the Brits love their soccer. But who knew they loved it so much that they’re actually causing earthquakes with their celebrations?
That’s exactly what happened when Leicester City scored a game-winning goal last month, leading some 30 thousand rabid fans to freak out and stomp and brawl, leading to a 0.3 magnitude earthquake. The same phenomenon was recorded when the Foxes scored a goal on March 1, although this led to a smaller 0.1 magnitude quake.
It’s not just soccer, either. Fans of the Seattle Seahawks have been known to shake the earth with the force of their celebrations in CenturyLink Field:
No matter how you shake it, that’s a hell of a lot of happiness being generated. Which is a hell of a lot better way to manufacture an earthquake than other man-made methods, like fracking.
