Icelandic police on Monday shot and killed a man who had opened fire on them—the first time anyone had been killed by police in the nation’s history. Police in Reykjavik first sent tear gas through the windows of the assailant’s building as the man fired at officers, but police were forced to enter when the suspect did not stop shooting at them. Two officers were shot as they entered his apartment. Iceland’s police chief said “police regret the incident and would like to extend their condolences to the family of the man.” He said the killing was “without precedent” in the country’s history.
