In the wake of Haiti’s devastating earthquake, the Obama administration said Haitians who are in America illegally can remain temporarily. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced the temporary protection, which is available only to Haitians residing in the U.S. as of last Tuesday. On Wednesday, Napolitano also said those already in detention would not be deported. Temporary protected status is typically arranged for those illegally living the U.S. who are unable to return to their country safely due to natural disaster, armed conflict, or some other cause.
