They pulled the lever for Rick Santorum or Mitt Romney, but 4 in 10 voters in the Land of Lincoln say the leading GOP candidates still fail to send a thrill up their electoral spines. More than 40 percent of Illinois Republicans who voted for Santorum or Romney in today’s state primary “have reservations” about the man they chose, exit polls show. The economy was the top issue for most voters, exit polls indicated, with 46 percent of those polled saying they had a gloomy view of the country’s fiscal future. Meanwhile, one fifth of the state’s voting population said that the economy is on the uptick. There are some indications that Romney has a demographic advantage in the state, where only 4 out of every 10 voters describe themselves as evangelicals and the same number of residents make $100,000 a year or more.
