A group campaigning for the legalization of marijuana held its first service as a church on Wednesday. The First Church of Cannabis (members identify as Cannaterians) hopes to classify marijuana legalization in Indiana as a religious liberty under the state’s Religious Freedom and Restoration Act, which went into effect Wednesday. The law has been criticized as a potential tool for discrimination against LGBT people, but Cannaterians hope to use it for marijuana legalization. Hymns performed at the service included “Amazing Grace” and Rick James’s “Mary Jane.”
