IOC Rejects Minute of Silence

There will not be a minute of silence to mark the 40th anniversary of the killing of 11 Israeli nationals at the Munich Olympics, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said Saturday. “We feel that the opening ceremony is an atmosphere that is not fit to remember such a tragic incident,” Rogge said of the proposed commemoration of the 1972 attack by Palestinian gunmen. Politicians in countries including the United States, Germany, and Israel have asked the Olympic Committee to reconsider incorporating a minute of silence into the opening ceremony, to be held in London on Friday.
