Iran Prez: Protests 'Going Nowhere'

Uprising

Ahmadinejad vows to punish opposition “enemies.”

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared Tuesday that his nation’s recent uprising is “going nowhere,” despite reports that thousands gathered in Tehran for the second day in a row. Ahmadinejad vowed to punish the “enemies” who organized the demonstrations, and said they were only trying “tarnish the nation’s brilliance.” He also dismissed the protesters as simply trying to undermine a recent rally held in honor of 32nd anniversary of the Iranian revolution. Meanwhile, President Obama criticized the Iranian leader, calling it “ironic” that Ahmadinejad had praised the Egyptian revolution but has been quashing similar efforts in Iran. Two people have been killed in clashes with police in Tehran, while opposition leaders were placed under house arrest.
