Protesters Fight Back

The Ashura protests have been marked by increased violence on both sides. In this clip, a group of rebels has allegedly seized a Basij militiaman, and is debating the next course of action. According to Facebook commenters, some crowd members are chanting "Let him go." The protesters’ actions have caused some outside observers to question their support for the opposition.

Protesters Corner Basij

In a powerful scene, protesters crowd several Basij into a corner, demanding accountability. “All you can do is kill your people is it?” a woman is reported to shout—as the militiamen beg for forgiveness, pleading that they “are not killers.” In the distance, a woman shouts: “Are you only brave on your motorbike, you piece of shit?”

Police Crack Down Hard on Protesters

The reinvigorated Iranian “Green movement” was greeted with an even more forceful response from the government. The battered and bloodied protesters in this video were allegedly beaten by police; the building on fire is a police station, say bloggers.

Tear Gas and Gun Shots in the Streets

Among the weapons Basij militiamen used to fight back crowds of protesters Sunday were tear gas and bullets. This dramatic if grainy footage purports to capture the chaos in Tehran’s streets.

Chanting Continues After Nightfall

Protests are said to have continued into the night, as captured (in sound if not image) in this alleged footage of chanting.
