Iraq hanged 36 men convicted of killing up to 1,700 military recruits at a former U.S. base in 2014. The murders at Camp Speicher were conducted by ISIS militants. Most of the individuals killed were Shia cadets and the violent attack helped mobilize them to fight ISIS. When Iraqi forces recaptured the area from ISIS control, mass graves were discovered.
