Security forces in Baghdad opened fire Friday on protesters who stormed the city’s so-called Green Zone. Dozens were injured, according to witness reports. The anti-government demonstrators were expressing their disapproval of Baghdad’s failure to act on anti-corruption reforms and enhanced security. According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were chanting: “Oh army, the country is hurt! Don’t side with the corrupt!” The Iraqi military now says it has the Green Zone under control. U.S. military personnel were not in danger.
