The Internal Revenue Service has reportedly stripped Richard Spencer’s infamous white-nationalist nonprofit of its tax-exempt status for failing to file its tax returns with the federal government. The Los Angeles Times unearthed IRS records showing that Spencer’s National Policy Institute failed to follow such procedures, and in a phone interview the white nationalist admitted, “It’s a bit embarrassing, but it’s not good. We’ll figure it out.” The IRS apparently misclassified the NPI in public as a group not required to file its tax returns—an error that was fixed in February, the agency said. The LAT also raised questions about whether the NPI ever filed proper paperwork to operate as a nonprofit in the state of Virginia—Spencer claims the group did, but the state’s government claims its status is “under review.”
