Italy is the last major Western country to legally recognize gay couples.

Italy’s parliament approved same-sex civil unions on Wednesday becoming the last major Western country to legally recognize gay couples. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi forced the bill into the law despite opposition from Catholic groups and gay activists’ reservations that it didn’t go far enough. The bill allows gay couples in the country to share a surname, use their partner’s pension funds when they die, and share assets.
