Japan Backs Down on Rape Claims

Won’t withdraw apology for army of sex slaves.

After creating a firestorm, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that they will not make any changes to the country's apology for the sexual slavery it propagated during the 1930s and ‘40s. Abe, who is seen as a nationalist, outraged China and South Korea by announcing a review of evidence that the Japanese army forced 200,000 Asian women into the sex trade. In 1993, Japan issued the "Kono statement" which made a historic apology for the tragedy and admitted the role of the army.
