Japan to Shut Down Nuke Plants

Japan said Friday that they will shut down their nuclear plants after 40 years of use following last year’s crisis at Fukushima Daiichi plant after the deadly tsunami. The government said Friday that it plans to introduce legislation that will require reactors to shut down after 40 years of use, and many of the country’s 54 nuclear reactors are nearly 40 years—including the reactors at Fukushima Daiichi, which was built in 1967. Under this restriction, only six of Japan’s plants will remain open in the coming years, a problem that the Asahi newspaper said Saturday could cause massive power shortages. The government has already decided to shut down Fukushima Daiichi’s six reactors.
