At Japan’s Fukushima plant, attempts to plug a massive leak of radioactive water from a cracked concrete shaft with fresh concrete failed, a TEPCO spokesman announced on Saturday. As an alternative, workers are planning to break the shaft’s ceiling and insert a polymer to stop the leak early on Sunday morning. TEPCO said it is exploring other options should the polymer fail, though the company has not yet identified what they would be. Until the leak is successfully plugged, contaminated water will continue spilling directly into the Pacific Ocean.
