J.D. Salinger Dies at 91

J.D. Salinger died from natural causes Wednesday at the age of 91. The famous recluse wrote The Catcher in The Rye in 1951 and lived for decades in isolation in Cornish, New Hampshire. He was born in New York City in 1919, and published his first story in 1940. After the publication of Catcher, he moved to Cornish and began to refuse interviews and reject fan mail. He married in 1955 and had two children, Matthew and Peggy (who later disowned him), before his divorce in 1967. Since its publication, Catcher has sold over 60 million copies worldwide. Salinger’s last published story, “Hapworth 16, 1928,” ran in The New Yorker in 1965.
