Ta-Nehisi Coates received the National Book Award for nonfiction on Wednesday for Between the World and Me, his searing bestseller about the experience of being black in America. Coates dedicated the award to his friend Prince Jones Jr., who was shot in killed by a police officer in 2000. “Every day you turn on the TV and see some kind of violence being directed at black people,” Coates said in an acceptance speech. “Over and over and over again. And it keeps happening.” Adam Johnson also won for his collection of short stories, Fortune Smiles. Johnson’s novel about North Korea, The Oprhan Master’s Son, won the Pulitzer in 2013.
