Russia and China are greater threats to U.S. national security than ISIS, according to the incoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford. At his confirmation hearing Wednesday, Dunford told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Russia’s nuclear-weapon stockpile and unpredictability made it “the greatest existential threat.” Dunford also listed China and North Korea above ISIS in terms of potential threats. “What keeps me up at night is our ability to respond to the unexpected,” he said. “On balance, our force can deal with the challenges that we have now. But there is very little residual capability.”
