Former NBC News correspondent Edwin Newman, known for his long journalism career as well as his insistence on using correct English, has died at the age of 91. He died of pneumonia on August 13, but the family did not announce his death until Wednesday so they could grieve privately. Newman began working for NBC in the early 1950s as correspondent, and later moved up the ranks to be an anchor on the Today show in the 1960s. Although Newman frequently joked he had a “spotless record of being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he covered most major events of the 20th century. But besides his journalism career, Newman was also famous for his insistence on proper English usage and correct grammar, and his two best-known books were about the English language.
