Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio racially profiled Latino drivers in his campaign to crack down on illegal immigration, a federal judge declared on Friday. The ruling was the result of a class-action lawsuit contending that the Maricopa County sheriff’s department improperly stopped, detained, and questioned drivers of Hispanic descent going back to 2007, thus violating their constitutional rights. The judge has ordered Arpaio, who calls himself “America’s sheriff,” to cease using race as a factor in law-enforcement decisions. Arpaio’s attorney has already confirmed that the sheriff is planning to appeal within the next 30 days.
