Justice Department: Gays Not Covered Under Federal Civil Rights Law

The Justice Department said in a federal suit on Wednesday that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not protect gay people from discrimination in the workplace. Justice Department lawyers wrote in an amicus brief that the ban on sex discrimination does not include sexual orientation, saying it would be up to Congress to alter the relevant provision of the 1964 law. “The Sessions-led Justice Department and the Trump administration are actively working to expose people to discrimination,” the American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement.
