White House adviser Kellyanne Conway on Sunday slammed Democrats for using the deaths of two detained migrant children as “political pawns” one day after President Trump blamed their tragic demise on his opponents. Conway made the statement during an interview with Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Trump blamed the deaths of little Felipe Alonzo-Gomez, age 8, and Jakelin Caal Maquin, on Democrats in several tweets Saturday. Bash asked Conway whether she was defending Trump’s comments. “Any death of a child, any death of anyone is an utter tragedy,” she said. “I think the President's point is an important one, which is that he has stayed in Washington to negotiate border security...which Democrats, until he took over as president, were all in favor of...I don’t like some of these Democrats using these deaths as political pawns.” Bash asked whether Trump was politicizing their deaths.“The president is not doing that,” Conway responded. “The president does not want these children to come on a perilous journey to begin with.” Conway also downplayed wall criticism as saying “you want wall to be a four-letter word.”
