The often deadly and illegal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) hits a high season in Kenya during the December holidays. Now, as schoolchildren in the country approach their holiday season, the country’s Office of Public Prosecution has issued a warning to parents: those who carry out the procedure will be prosecuted. The agency said it would “take legal action against anybody involved.” The punishment is a minimum three-year jail term, and life imprisonment if the procedure results in a death.
