GOP presidential candidates predictably pounced when President Obama announced the Iraq troop withdrawal last month, but there was little substance to the soundbites. Now The Washington Post’s Charles Krauthammer makes the conservative case for how Obama screwed up a done deal in the country. Obama took office with victory in hand; his only task left was to determine how many U.S. peacekeeping troops would remain. But the diplomatic talks ended in “abject failure,” and now the White House is treating the complete withdrawal like a victory instead of an accident: “Years from now, we will be asking not ‘Who lost Iraq?’—that already is clear—but ‘Why?’”
