Lord Ashley, the former Parliament member who led the campaign against Thalidomide, died Saturday at the age of 89. Jack Ashley lost his hearing shortly after winning the seat of Stoke-on-Trent in 1966 but did not let that hamper his efforts to bring about equal rights for disabled persons. Even Ashley’s foes would turn toward him during debates so that he could read their lips during the 26 years he represented Stoke-on-Trent in the House of Commons. Lord Ashley later became president of the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.
