Just when the viewer at home thought the Grammys red carpet was looking a little muted Monday evening, along came Lady Gaga, ready for her David Bowie tribute. Very ready. Somewhere Bowie, observing the whole marvelous getup, including those vertiginous shoes, was saying, “Yes, that’ll do nicely.”

The Grammys red carpet was remarkably free of controversy. At least early on. Taylor Swift was there in a red bandeau top and pink slashed skirt. Commanding, and ready to launch as many hashtags you can stand.

Selena Gomez was there with Swift, girl-squadding intact. Her frock was blue, sparkly, and came with cutouts.

Zendaya was remarkably cordial to the team from E!, which, given the whole controversy over her hair c/o Fashion Police, was surprising. She looked great in a charcoal DSquared tuxedo.

We’d say “hello,” but she’d be within her rights to punch us. Adele, looking beautiful, in a sparkly black dress that has a more than a hint of “severe governess goes out for the night.”

Crikey, Ciara shows how to wear a dress-slit—and a two-tone dress come to that, black on one side, patterned on the other. Key to this look for anyone keen to try it: a toned body. The result could be as “wow” as it is here.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend: quite simply, hot, lovely, and fun. May that never change.
