In a press conference Monday afternoon, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said the homeless man killed by three police officers on Sunday "forcibly grabbed one of the officer's holstered pistols." Beck displayed photos of the pistol with a dislodged slide and magazine, which he said is indicative of a struggle for the weapon. The Los Angeles Times reports however that enhanced it reviewed video only "appears to show the man's hand reaching in the direction of one officer's waistband" and that "none of the videos made public so far definitively show" a struggle for a weapon. Beck said two body cameras captured the "brutal, brutal fight." The homeless man, who went by Africa, had recently been released from a mental health facility. Police were responding to a robbery call when they came upon Africa. Beck said the officers had recieved special trained in dealing with the homeless and mentally ill.
