Lee Dumped 45 Trillion Gallons of Rain

Tropical Storm Lee dumped an estimated 45 trillion gallons of rain through the U.S.—and killed 14 people in its wake. Virginia’s governor declared a state of emergency Friday after one of its major highways flooded, while President Obama declared a state of emergency in New York and Pennsylvania. More than 100,000 people were evacuated in the wake of the storm—75,000 of them on the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania, which local officials said crested in the wee hours Friday at 25.17 inches. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said there was “significant damage” to upstate New York, and the Passiac River in New Jersey, already battered by Hurricane Irene, reported its “second-most devastating flood in history.”
