After the discovery of six forgotten vials of the smallpox virus, federal regulators have uncovered many other overlooked samples of infectious biological agents in the same freezer area. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a statement that “327 carefully packaged vials labeled with names of various biological agents such as dengue, influenza, Q fever and rickettsia” were discovered in the same cold storage area at the National Institute of Health. The FDA said there is no evidence that anyone was exposed to these potentially lethal agents, but admitted the discovery is upsetting. "Overlooking such a sample collection is clearly unacceptable,” it said in a statement. The news comes just a month after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention struggled with accidentally exposing workers to anthrax due to its own lax safety measures.
