In an appearance on NBC’s Today, former top Trump campaign official Corey Lewandowski said he would happily cooperate with authorities in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, but is so far unaware what role he plays in it. Just the day before, it was unveiled that former Trump adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia. Documents released as part of that case show his communications about Russia with at least one “high-ranking campaign official.” Savannah Guthrie asked Lewandowski on Tuesday: “Are you the ‘high-ranking campaign official’ who received three or four emails from George Papadopoulos?” Lewandowki responded, “It’s a great question Savannah, and I don’t know the answer to it.” He added, “I was receiving thousands of emails a day... You’re asking me to remember an email from April of 2016 when, on any given day, I would’ve received a thousand emails, and this would have come from a low-level volunteer.” (Papadopoulos was an oft-cited foreign-policy adviser to then-candidate Trump. Even now, many of his officials are unpaid “volunteers.”)
