Eight men have been sentenced to life in prison by Egyptian courts for sexual assaults during Tahrir Square protests in Cairo. These are the first sentences handed down since Egypt’s government tightened laws on perpetrators of sexual assault. The sentences were related to four separate instances of sexual assault, including at the inauguration of President Abdel-Fatta al-Sisi. The issue of rising sexual violence in Egypt has become a major problem for the country's leaders.
