U.S. citizen Lori Berenson, who has spent the past 15 years in prison in Peru, was delayed from leaving the country on Saturday, despite a judge’s ruling the day before that she could leave. Berenson was pulled off a bus 16 years ago and charged with aiding the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, or MRTA, a guerrilla group. Despite never being convicted as participating in any violent acts, Berenson had become the face of terrorism in Peru and she said her life after being paroled last year had been difficult. A judge on Friday ruled that she could leave the country, but when she tried to leave Saturday, Peru’s interior minister stopped her, saying he had not been notified of the ruling. Berenson, who has a 2-year-old son, has been ordered to return to Lima by Jan. 11 for another hearing.
