Rescue efforts are underway for residents in the southeastern Louisiana town of Plaquemines Parish, where Isaac— which was downgraded from hurricane to tropical storm status Wednesday afternoon—has left dozens stranded along the town’s east bank. Parish officials say at least six people have been picked up by rescuers, and that many are hiding out in their attics as flood waters rise to 9 feet in certain areas. A search and rescue operation is also underway at the town’s ferry landing, where an estimated 65 people are stranded. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Wednesday that he will travel to Plaquemines Parish to observe the rescue effort there—and he said an “intentional breach” of the town’s levees may be needed to release some of the water and pressure.
