Machine Keeps Lungs Alive Outside Body

For up to six hours.

The University of Michigan has developed a new machine capable of keeping lungs “alive” for up to six hours outside of the body. The machine pumps special fluid through the lungs to “recondition” them for transplant. The aim is to flush out donor lungs and make them usable for longer periods of time, potentially saving more lives.
