An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 rattled parts of Alaska Wednesday from the Kenai Peninsula north to Fairbanks. The quake, centered about 60 miles west of Willow, hit around 2:30 p.m. and was “undoubtedly tied to the Pacific Ocean tectonic plate that actually resides underneath the Cook Inlet,” according to state seismologist Michael West.
